I was terribly sorry to hear that Bertram had broken a rather expensive vase at your house while playing with Louis one day last week. He says and I believe him that it was an accident, occurring while he and Louis were kept indoors by the rain.
You will be glad to know that he told me of the accident himself, after a few days' silence. Probably he thought you would tell me, and when you said nothing of it, his conscience hurt more than ever. I must thank you for your own generous attitude in not mentioning it.
Naturally, I want to replace it or pay you its value. Will you, please, tell me which you prefer?
