There was once an 11-year-old boy who went fishing every time he went to an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before bass(巴斯鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching other fish with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵) and put it into the lake. Suddenly the boy felt something very big pulling on the lure. His father watched with satisfaction as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the big fish, The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10p.m. —two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You’ll have to put it back, son.” he said.
“Dad!”cried the boy. “There will be other fish.” said his father. “Not as big as this one.” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats could be seen in the moonlight. He looked again at his father.
Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the fish, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed:He threw the huge bass into the black water.
The big fish disappeared, The boy thought that he would never again see such a big fish. That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He often takes his own son and daughters to fish at the same place.
And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me about how to find accommodation(住所). I suggested that they should stay at \"bed and breakfast\" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
\"We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,\"t hey said. \"Because we found that most families were away on holiday.\"
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought \"VACANCIES\" meant \"holidays\" because Spanish word for \"holiday\" is \"vacations\". So they did not go to houses where the sign outside said \"VACANCIES\where the sign said \"NO VACANCIES\on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, a word very similar to \"DIVERSION\" means fun. In English it means that workman is repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word \"DIVERSION\" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said \"Thank you\" in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that \"Thank you\" in French means \"No, thank you\".
1. I suggested that they stay at \"bed and breakfast\" houses because___ A.they would be able to practice English B.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels C.it would be convenient for them to have dinner
D.there would be no problem about finding accommodation 2. \"No vacancies\" in English means___. A.free rooms B.no free rooms C.not away on holiday D.holidays
3. If you see a road sign that says \"Diversion\",you will___ A.fall into a hole
B.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself C.find that the road is blocked by people D.have to take a different road
4. I was surprised when the coffee pot was taken away because I___. A.hadn't finished drinking my coffee B.was expecting another cup of coffee C.meant that I didn't want any more D.was never misunderstood 【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.B 【解答】
根据第一段中的\"because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family,因为这种住宿方式使外国游客有机会和家人说英语\"可知这样做可以让外乡的旅客有机会和当地的家庭交流,练习英语,故选A.
根据第二段中的\"So they did not go to house where the sign outside said‘VACABCUES',which in English means there are free rooms.所以他们没有去外面的招牌上写着\"空\"的房子,这在英语中意味着有免费的房间\"后面的定语从句解释了这个单词的含义,”vacancies”就是\"有空房\",\"No vacancies\"是”没空房”,所以故选B. 3. D 考查细节理解.根据倒数第二段中的\"In English,it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road在英语中,意思是工人在修路,你必须走另外一条路,\"可知Diversion意味着路在整修,你需要换一条路,故选D.
根据最后一段中的\"I said‘Thank you'' in French.I meant that I would like some more,我用法语说了\"谢谢\",我的意思是我还想再要一些\"可知在法国,别人送上咖啡你说谢谢的时候就是在说想要更多咖啡,故选B.
D
Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home?People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young(less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is likely that the two pets will get along smoothly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the
homes, while fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission(顺从).
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is surprising that cats can learn how to talk\"Dog\
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other's body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other's body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets-to people who don't get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
1.The underlined word “smoothly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to___. A.early B.mostly C.quickly D.well
2.Some cats and dogs may fight when ___. A.they are cold to each other B.they look away from each other
C.they misunderstand each other’s body language D.they are introduced at an early age
3.What is found surprising about cats and dogs? A.They eat and sleep together. B.They watch each other's behaviors. C.They learn to speak each other's language. D.They know something from each other's voices. 4.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?___ A.We should learn to get along well with others B.We should know more about animals.
C.We should live in peace with animals. D.We should learn more body languages. 【答案】1.D 2.C 3.C 4.A 【解答】
One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different.,可知C正确.
3.C. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language.
A.A small white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.
A. It’s not a big deal even if you lose. B. Start the things you want to do right now. C. It always takes time to be a winner. D. You can always learn something when trying. E. Don’t worry! It’ll probably never happen. F. Don’t compare yourself with others. I am forty now. I left school twenty- two years ago. Here’s my list of five things I hope to share with you teenagers at school.
1.__________ I always wanted to be the best, and one way of feeling good about myself was to see how much better I was than others. There was only one problem with this. When I saw they were better than me, I felt terrible. Now I compare me with myself. I ask myself if I do things as well as I can.
2.___________ How much time do you spend worrying about the future? I used to worry a lot. Now I know most things you fear will never happen. They’re just monsters in your own mind. Even if they happen, they may not be as bad as you expected. In six months, you probably won't remember most of the things you worry about now.
3. ___________When I was young, I often failed to start things I expected to do because I thought they would take too long to be finished. For example, I always wanted to write a book. But when I thought it might take me more than one year, I lost my enthusiasm( 热情). It seemed to me that it was such a long time. Now I know a year is nothing. If I'd started that book when I was 16, I might have written over 10 books by now. I' m upset with myself for not even trying
4.____________ As a young child you should try many new things. If you fail, you should try again and again until you learn. But at school you are usually encouraged to do things right. Then you stop trying new things in case you get them wrong. You are losing chances to challenge yourselves. I always remind myself: I had fallen off bike many times before learned to ride it.
5. ____________ I hated losing when I was younger. Of course, it's nice to win sometimes and to be the best at something. But we can't be winners all the time. Learning to lose is one of the life's most important lessons. If you try your best, then you will never be angry with yourself. 【答案】 FEBDA
根据“When I saw they were better than me, I felt terrible. Now I compare me with myself.”
2. 根据“How much time do you spend worrying about the future?”“你经常花时间担忧未来的事吗?”和“Now I know most things you fear will never happen.”“现在我知道你害怕的大部分事情都不会发生”选择E。
3. 根据“When I was young, I often failed to start things I expected to do because I thought they would take too long to be finished”“年轻的时候害怕开始做自己想做的事情因为做完这件事可能要花费很多的时间。”
5. 根据“But we can't be winners all the time.”
