Anthropologists are scientists that study people who often lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago.Items those men, women, and children left behind when they died—everything from clothing to jewelry and tools—tell anthropologists a lot.And sometimes even their words survive.

Experts believe that a discovery in Mexico is the oldest example of writing ever found in the Americas. The people who created it probably lived 3,000 years ago, long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World.

Workers digging in a rock mine happened to notice a stone block with marks carved onto its surface. They found the large piece of stone near the city of Cascajal,Mexico, which was once the capital of an ancient people called the Olmec.

“There are signs on the block that seem to show objects used by the Olmec during their religious ceremonies,”says Dr Stephen Houston of Brown University in the US.“There is a sign that looks very similar to a knife and another that looks like the chair of a King,”he explains.

Houston,an expert on the writing systems of ancient cultures, says the discovery is exciting because“it makes clear that the Olmec could read and write. It is like hearing voices from the past.”

But experts don’t know exactly what the writing says.Finding other examples of Olmec writing could help decipher_the_puzzle. “We could have whole sets of ancient writing which will basically make ancient people speak to us directly,”says Houston.“There are many puzzles to be solved,

and this is just one of them.”

Researchers have uncovered a village that may have been home to the builders of Stonehenge(史前巨石柱),the mysterious circular stone monument in England.

The village of small houses dates back to about 2600 B.C..That’s about the same time Stonehenge was built.

“Clearly, this is a place that was of enormous importance,”said researcher Mike Parker Pearson.

The ancient houses are at a site known as Durrington Walls, about two miles from Stonehenge.Researchers believe Stonehenge was a memorial site or cemetery(墓地)for the villagers. The village also had a wooden version of the stone circle. It may have been used by people attending festivals at Stonehenge.

Eight of the houses have been excavated,or dug up.Researchers say there may be as many as 25 of them. The wooden houses were square and about 14 feet along each side. There are signs of bed frames along the walls and of a dresser or storage unit. The houses also had fireplaces.

Two of the houses were separate from the others and may have been the homes of community leaders.Researchers say those sites didn’t have the debris(残骸)and household trash that was found in the other homes.Stone tools, animal bones, arrowheads and other artifacts were found throughout the village site.

Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of an 800-year-old Aztec pyramid in the heart of the Mexican capital that could show the ancient city is at least a century older than previously thought.

Mexican archaeologists found the ruins, which are about 11 metres high,in the central Tlatelolco area, once a major religious and political centre for the Aztec elite(上层集团).

Since the discovery of another pyramid 15 years ago, historians have thought Tlatelolco was founded by the Aztecs in 1325,the same year as the nearby twin city of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire. The Spanish seized Tenochtitlan in 1521 to found Mexico City, conquering the Aztecs.

The pyramid newly discovered last month as part of an investigation begun in August, could have been built in 1100 or 1200,indicating the Aztecs began to develop their civilization in the mountains of central Mexico earlier than believed.

“We have found the stairs of this, much older, pyramid. The(Aztec)time line is going to need to be revised,”archaeologist Patricaia Ledesma said at the site on Thursday.

Tlatelolco, visited by thousands of tourists for its pre-Hispanic ruins and colonial-era Spanish church and convent,is also infamous for the 1968 massacre of leftist students by state security forces there, days before Mexico hosted the Olympic Games.

Ms Ledesma and the archaeological group’s coordinator,Salvador Guilliem, said they would continue to dig and study the area next year to get a better idea of the pyramid’s size and age.

The archaeologists also have detected a sculpture that could be of the Aztec rain god Tlaloc,or of the god of the sky and earth Tezcatlipoca.

In addition, the dig has turned up five skulls and a series of rooms near the pyramid that could date from 1431.

“What we hope to find soon should tell us much more about the society of

Tlatelotco,”said Ms Ledesma.

Mexico City is littered with pre-Hispanic ruins. In August, archaeologists in the city’s crimeridden Iztapalapa district unearthed what they believe may be the main pyramid of Tenochtitlan.

The Aztecs,a warlike and religious people who built monumental works and are credited with inventing chocolate, ruled an empire stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and encompassing much of modern-day central Mexico.

(2017·全国卷Ⅰ)I work with Volunteers for Wildlife,a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley.Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking;survival is never certain. However, when it works,it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown.She had found a young owl(猫头鹰)on the ground.When I arrived,I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl.It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick(雏鸟)and it seemed fine.If I could locate the nest,I might have been able to put it back, but no luck.My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful.A wire basket was found.I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable.I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent.I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults;they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well.I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all!The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings.I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
