My Favorite Chinese Festivals

Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I'm from China and I love learning about the amazing festivals we celebrate every year. Our festivals are full of fun traditions, yummy food, and great stories. Let me tell you about some of my favorites!

Chinese New Year

This is probably the most famous Chinese festival. We call it \"Chunjie\" which means Spring Festival. It celebrates the start of a new year on the lunar calendar. The celebration actually lasts 15 days, but the biggest day is New Year's Eve.

On New Year's Eve, my whole family gathers together for a huge feast with lots of delicious dishes like dumplings, noodles, fish, and meat. My favorite part is the dumplings because I love trying to make fun shapes with the dough. After dinner, we kids get lai see - that's lucky money in little red envelopes. So cool! The best part is watching the incredible fireworks shows and fireworks displays. Fireworks are supposed to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck. The night sky lights up with bright colors and loud booming sounds. It's amazing!

On New Year's Day, we wear brand new clothes from head to toe for good luck. I love getting new toys and treats too. We visit friends and family, watch dragon dances and lion dances performed on the streets, and hang upside-down fu symbols for luck and fortune. Qingming Festival

Qingming is also called Tomb Sweeping Day. It's a day to honor our ancestors by cleaning and decorating their grave sites. My grandparents take me to put fresh flowers, light incense and burn paper money at my great-grandparents' graves. It sounds kind of sad, but it's actually a happy family day.

We also go for walks in the countryside, fly kites, and have spring outings and picnics. Qingming celebrates the fresh green colors of spring after the cold winter. Lots of people plant trees or go on hikes in the mountains. It's a peaceful time to be outside and enjoy nature. Dragon Boat Festival

One of my favorite festivals is the Dragon Boat Festival because of the exciting dragon boat races! They happen every year around the summer solstice in June or July. Long narrow

boats shaped like dragons race on rivers and lakes. The boats have bright colors and drums beating rhythms for the rowers. Dragon boat races started a long time ago to honor an ancient patriotic poet named Qu Yuan who drowned himself in protest against a corrupt ruler. People originally raced their boats and threw sticky rice balls into the river to keep hungry fish away from Qu Yuan's body. Now we eat those sticky rice balls called zongzi as a tradition.

Zongzi are one of my favorite festival foods! They are pyramid shaped and wrapped up in bamboo leaves. My mom puts delicious fillings inside like sweet bean paste, meat, egg yolks, and vegetables. Yum! Mid-Autumn Festival

Another awesome festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which happens every year on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. That's usually sometime in September or October. This holiday celebrates the year's biggest, brightest full moon and the fall harvest season.

My favorite part is carrying a brightly glowing lantern at night for the lantern festival. Lighting the lanterns is so magical and fun! My family buys moon cakes too, which are round

pastries filled with sweet bean paste, egg yolks, or lotus seed. The round cakes look just like the full moon.

Mooncakes are shared between family and friends under the big, beautiful moon. It's a night for appreciating the simple, lovely things in life - like being with your loved ones, looking at the moon, and tasting delicious festival foods.

Well, that's my introduction to some of the biggest

traditional Chinese festivals! They are times for honoring culture, being with family, and feeling connected to the natural cycles of the seasons. Festivals make me feel proud of my Chinese heritage. I hope you enjoyed learning about them too! Let me know if you have any other questions.
