My 2023 Winter Vacation
Hi there! My name is Michael and I'm a 7th grader here in the United States. I just got back from my winter break vacation and I'm really excited to tell you all about it! This was one of the most fun and adventurous vacations I've ever had.
It all started on December 16th when we had our last day of school before the holidays. I was so pumped for almost 3 whole weeks off from classes, homework, and getting up early. On that first day, I slept in until 10am which was absolute heaven compared to my normal 6:30am wake up time for school.
When I finally rolled out of bed, I spent most of the day just relaxing, watching TV and movies, and playing video games. My parents let me do basically whatever I wanted that first day since they knew I'd been working really hard at school. My little brother Jonathan who is 9 years old joined me and we played our favorites like Minecraft, Roblox, and Marvel's Spider-Man game. The next few days were filled with more lounging around, but my parents made sure I got out of the house some too. We went to the mall and the movies a couple times. I got some new clothes which is always nice, and we saw the new animated
movie \"Leo's Incredible Journey\" which was really cool. The animations were mind-blowing!
On the 20th, we packed up the car and made the 6-hour drive down to my grandparents' house in South Carolina. They live right on a beautiful lake, so I always look forward to visiting them. As soon as we arrived, my brother and I raced down to the dock to look at the water.
My grandparents had gotten a new fishing boat since the last time we visited, so we were eager to take that out. The day after we got there, my grandfather took us out on the lake to do some fishing. I'm not a huge fan of sitting still, but I actually landed a couple decent-sized bass which was exciting! Jonathan didn't catch anything but he had fun driving the boat around a little once we found a nice quiet area.
We spent a lot of our time outdoors during that part of break. My grandparents have some hiking trails on their property in the woods, so we went exploring a few times. One day my grandfather took us on a long 5-mile hike, and I was pretty tired after that! Another day we played some outdoor games like cornhole, ladder ball, and bocce ball which was really fun.
For Christmas Eve, we went to my aunt and uncle's house for a big family party. I have cousins around my age so we always
have a lot of fun together. This year, we had an awesome gingerbread house building competition. We split into teams of 3 and everybody worked so hard on their designs. My team made a replica of the White House which was pretty elaborate. In the end, my cousin's team won for their cool gingerbread version of Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter.
After the gingerbread fun, we had our traditional big Christmas dinner. My grandmother is an amazing cook and she made a huge feast with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, and pretty much every other classic dish you can think of. I helped myself to second and third helpings because it was just so delicious! We followed that up with various pies, cookies, and other desserts. By the end of the night, I was completely stuffed.
On Christmas morning, we all gathered together again at my grandparents' house to open presents. I was really happy with my haul - I got an electric scooter, some new video games, a volleyball set, and a bunch of other cool stuff. Jonathan made out like a bandit too and got tons of new Lego sets which he loves.
We spent another few days just hanging out and enjoying our time in South Carolina. We took the new boat out on the lake
a couple more times and tried our hand at tubing which was a blast. One day, we also visited a nearby zoo which had some really neat exhibits with exotic animals. My favorite was definitely the monkey habitat.
Finally, it was time to head back home on December 29th. We stopped for the night about halfway at a hotel in North Carolina. My brother and I had a great time swimming in the hotel pool for a few hours before bed. The drive wasn't too bad since we split it up over two days.
Once we were back home on the 30th, I spent the last few days of vacation just hanging out and recovering from all the running around! I played a ton of my new video games, rode my new scooter around the neighborhood, and just enjoyed not having any responsibilities. We took down all our Christmas decorations on New Year's Day which is always kind of sad but also makes me ready for the new year ahead.
All in all, this winter vacation was one I'll never forget. Getting to spend quality time with my family is always the best part of these long breaks from school. I feel like I was really able to recharge my batteries after a tough few months of classes. While it was tough to go back yesterday, I'm motivated to work
hard again this semester. And I already can't wait for my next school vacation!
