The excitation circuit has asection which includes an excitation coil, and the excitation circuit is operable to energisethe section, the energy causing current to flow in the section when the section is notdriven, thereby exciting an oscillating electromagnetic field. Means for coupling to theelectromagnetic field is provided, thereby damping the oscillations of the

electromagnetic field. The one or more excitation circuits or the coupling means areassociated with the rotatable member. By providing such a coupling means damping canbe improved.
