My Meaningful Holiday Break
The last holiday break from school was really fun and exciting! I did so many cool things that made it a very meaningful time. First of all, I got to spend a lot of extra time with my family which was awesome.
During the school year, my parents are usually at work a lot and my siblings and I are busy with school and activities. But when we're all on break, we get to do way more stuff together as a family. My dad took a couple weeks off from his job, so he was home with us every day.
We did all kinds of fun activities and little trips. One day, we went to the children's museum downtown. They had these really neat interactive science exhibits where you could do experiments and learn about things like electricity, magnets, and how machines work. My favorite was making little cars out of wooden pieces and then racing them down ramps to see whose would go the fastest!
Another day, we drove out to my aunt and uncle's farm and went hiking in the woods near their house. We saw a deer eating plants by the creek and lots of cool birds and squirrels too. My
little sister Sam wasn't able to walk the whole way, so my big brother Josh let her ride on his shoulders part of the time. After the hike, my aunt made us all delicious sandwiches and we had a picnic by the old red barn.
We also went ice skating at an outdoor rink that was all decorated with Christmas lights and decorations. I'm not very good at ice skating yet, but my parents helped me stay up and not fall down too much. Josh and my cousin Emma were both really great skaters though - they could do all kinds of spins and jumps. It was fun just watching them glide around so gracefully. After skating, we got cups of hot chocolate to warm up. I put a ton of mini marshmallows in mine!
In addition to the fun family activities, I also got to do some meaningful projects and work on self-improvement over the break too. For one thing, my parents had me start doing more chores around the house to help out more. I had jobs like setting and clearing the table for meals, taking out the trash and recycling bins, and feeding our dog Buddy. It was good for me to pitch in more and become more responsible.
I also worked on teaching myself some basic coding skills by following tutorials online and working through coding games and puzzles. My dad is a computer programmer, so he helped
me a little bit too when I got stuck on concepts I didn't
understand. It was challenging for sure, but also really satisfying when I could get my little programs and games to finally run correctly.
Probably the most meaningful thing I did though was volunteer work. My mom signed us all up to volunteer at a local food bank one morning sorting incoming food donations. We checked for damage, organized them into categories like canned goods, dried pastas, cereals and the different food groups. Then we boxed them up so they could go out to distribute to families in need.
The food bank leader told us that one in six people in our city struggles with hunger and food insecurity. That was a shocking statistic to me. He said our volunteer work would help provide meals for over 200 families. I felt really good knowing I was helping out in a tangible way.
After our volunteering shift, my mom took us out for ice cream as a treat. While we ate our sundaes, we talked about how fortunate and blessed we are as a family. We have a nice home, enough food and clothing, and can afford some fun experiences like our holiday activities. Lots of people don't have those
advantages though. My mom said it's important to have compassion and always try to help others in need when we can. That conversation really stuck with me. It made me
appreciate how lucky I am even more. It also inspired me to want to do more volunteer work and think of ways I could make a positive difference, even if it's just through small acts of kindness and service. The holiday was fun for sure, but doing that volunteer work and having those meaningful discussions with my family is what really made it a special, memorable break. So those are some of the most meaningful highlights from my last holiday break away from school. I made awesome memories with my loved ones through our fun adventures and outings. But I also got to work on self-improvement skills, help others in need through volunteering, and gain a deeper appreciation for the blessings in my life. It was the perfect balance of excitement and meaning!
