The Republic of the Fiji Islands is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean about 2, 000 km northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. The island state is inhabited by native Fijians and other minorities like the Indo-Fijians and other smaller groups. The influence of so many diverse groups of people has contributed in making Fiji society a truly multi-ethnic one. The religion in Fiji is also diverse and every religious group gets equal opportunities.

The Fijians consider their national costume a representative of the culture of Fiji. The national costume of Fijians in the earlier times used to be loincloths for men and grass skirts for women. The skirt lengths would determine the status of a woman. A single woman used to wear short skirts but long skirts had to be worn by married women. The national dress of the Fijians now is Sulu. Resembling a skirt, both genders wear it.

The Fijians are pretty easy-going, but if you are invited into a village, wear simple clothing and take off your hat (wearing one is an insult to the chief) when in the village. Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it’s also insulting to touch someone’s head — which can be tempting when you are surrounded by wide-eyed, smiling children.

When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava. The gift, (a “sevusevu”) will cost less than FJ $ 20 for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he/ she will prepare that. Be prepared to shake hands and answer personal questions like, where are you from, are you married, how many children do you have and so on. 1. We can infer from the first paragraph that ________.

A. different groups of people live in peace in Fiji B. people of different groups are unfriendly to one another C. the diverse religions in Fiji can cause trouble D. the island state of Fiji is ruled by native Fijian

2. In the past, we could tell whether a woman is married or not by ________. A. whether she wore loincloths or grass skirt C. the color of the skirt she wore

B. the length of her grass skirts D. the materials of costume she wore

3. If you touch the head of a lovely boy in Fiji, he will probably ________. A. smile happily at you C. be angry with you

B. present you with a gift D. laugh at you

4. What kind of clothes should you wear when you go to a village in Fiji? A. Colorful clothes.

B. Their national costume. C. Loincloths.

D. Plain clothes.

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a meeting in Chicago. They had told their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner. However, the meeting lasted longer than expected.

Their flights were scheduled to leave out of Chicago’s O’ Hare Airport, and they had to race to the airport. In their rush, one of these salesmen kicked over a table, which held a display of baskets of apples. Apples flew everywhere.

Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their boarding, all but one stopped whose name was Jim. He paused and saw the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his friends to go on without him and told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at home and explain his taking a later flight.

Then he returned to the place where the apples were all over the floor. He was glad that he did. The 16-year-old girl at the apple stand was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them into the baskets. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become bruised. So he set these aside in another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $ 20 for the damage we did.” She nodded with tears.

He continued on with, “I hope we didn’t spoil your day too badly.”

As the salesman started to walk away, the surprised blind girl called out to him, “Mister…” He paused and

turned back. She continued, “Are you Jesus?”

5. What do we learn from the girl’s question in the last paragraph? A. She didn’t know who Jim really was. C. She didn’t believe what Jim had done.

B. She mistook Jim for Jesus. D. She was moved by Jim’s deed.

6. Which of the following is not a proper word to describe Jim? A. Kind.

B. Strong-willed.

C. Helpful.

D. Warm-hearted.

7. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. A Man’s Kind Action C. A Blind Girl’s Bad Luck

B. Picking Up the Fallen Apples D. A Blind Girl Who Sold Apples

As each spring passes, fewer and fewer bees are coming back again, buzzing from flower to flower. Their absence might have picnickers celebrating, but it has scientists scratching their heads. The fact is, the world's bees are disappearing at an alarming rate, and scientists have not been able to uncover the reason for this disturbing occurrence.

Although scientists don't yet know the source of CCD, they have theories. Some think that cellphone usage might be the cause. The radiation sent off by phones could be interrupting the bee's internal navigation system (体内导航系统). German research also shows that bee behavior changes when they are near power lines. Other scientists believe that the use of certain pesticides (杀虫剂) might be the reason. Another possible cause could be biological, with bees being affected by a disease that spreads from one to another.

This summer, children jumping through sprinklers (喷泉) in the hot July air may not have noticed the lack of bees. Picnicking families will be happy to have only ants to shoo away.

However, beekeepers and scientists will continue to scratch their heads and sweat in a way that has nothing to do with the heat, but rather with the continuing disappearance of what could be the world's most important creature—the bee.

8. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The Importance of Bees C. The Effect of Pesticides

9. Who can feel happy with the absence of bees? A. Farmers.

B. Picnickers.

C. Scientists.

D. Ice cream makers.

B. Bee Trouble

D. Summer Without Bees

10. The radiation sent off by phones could cause bees to ________.

A. have terrible disease C. lose their way

11. What can we conclude from the passage? A. Picnickers might have caused the loss of bees.

B. get stuck on power lines D. kill themselves

B. Bees have been greatly affected by the summer heat.

C. Many factors contribute to the disappearance of bees. D. No one knows exactly why bees are disappearing.

D

A principle (原则) I learned back in the early days of computers was “garbage in, garbage out”. In other words, poor input (输入) leads to poor output. I think the same principle applies to our kids’ speech. If they have a steady diet of cultural “garbage”—harmful social media, or music, movies and books that are against your family’s values, we can be sure those “inputs” will leak out in what they say. No, we can’t keep our children from every negative influence, but we must always remember how input affects output and set proper rules.

In our home, this means we seek to provide an environment that contributes to our kids’ ability to communicate with love. Yes, we do monitor media influences and other sources of negative speeches. But more importantly, we aim to model calm, loving responses to life’s challenges.

When bad things happen, I try not to complain. When normal childhood accidents occur, I remember that although difficult, it is still easier to remove grape juice stains from carpet than to erase harsh (严厉的) and unloving words shouted at a child whose little fingers have failed her. And when I fail—when my children have witnessed unkind words, an angry temper—I will admit my mistake and ask for their forgiveness.

We may sometimes need to speak truth, but even if words are true and delivered in a kind, warmhearted tone, we rarely need to say everything that’s on our mind.

Remind your kids to keep their words gentle, respectful and brief. Sticking to just a few comments in a difficult conversation increases the chances that our listeners will be responsive to what we say. Too much salt destroys the dish, and it can also ruin a relationship.

12. Which of the following is considered to be a diet of cultural “garbage”? A. Negative influence from the media. C. Loud music or dull books.

B. Addiction to computers. D. Garbage thrown all around.

13. What is the most important in teaching children to keep their words gentle and respectful? A. Keeping them from negative influence. C. Setting a good example to them.

B. Always telling them the truth.

D. Apologizing for your own angry manners.

14. What will the author probably do when the children spoil something at home?

A. The author will shout at them.

C. The author will remain calm and speak gently. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. Teaching kids good manners.

C. Teaching kids the importance of respect.

B. The author will punish them. D. The author will ask them to apologize.

B. Forming good relations with kids. D. Teaching kids the weight of words.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.

She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost and found but l really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The Following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretend I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I never say anything about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly, so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework she was there to help.

There was only one problem with this perfect dog: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for. 注意:

1.所续写短文的词数应为120左右;
