Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to

understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __72__ There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __74__ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.

What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__ To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

A. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

B. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

C. “One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says.

D. Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic. E. Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.

17. Public Speaking Training

Get a coach

___36___,so get help. Since there are about a billion companies out there all ready to offer you public speaking training and courses, here are some things to look for when deciding the training that’s right for you.

Focus on positives

Any training you do to become more effective at public speaking should always focus on the positive aspects of what you already do well. Nothing can hurt confidence more than being told that you aren’t doing well.___37___, so good public speaking training should develop those instead of telling you what you shouldn’t do.

___38___

If you find a public speaking course that looks as though it’s going to give you lots of dos and don’ts, walk away! Your brain is so full of what you’re going to be talking about.___39___ . As far as we’re concerned, there are basically no hard and fast rules about public speaking. Your audience can be your friends.

You are a special person not a clone

Most importantly, good public speaking training should treat you as a special one, with your own personal habits. ___40___. Your training course should help you bring out your personality, not try to turn you into someone you’re not. A. You aren’t like anybody else B. You already do lots of things well C. Turn your back on too many rules D. Practise speaking whenever possible

E. Whatever the presentation, public speaking is tough F .The one thing you don’t want is for them to fall asleep

G. So trying to force a whole set of rules into it will just make things worse

36. E 37. B 38. C 39. G 40. A

根据下一句ready to offer you public speaking training and courses(准备为你提供公开演讲训练和课程)可知开头说的是与public speaking(公开演讲)有关的问题,E项:Whatever the presentation, public speaking is tough.

后一句so good public speaking training should develop those与空格形成因果关系,所以空格中应表达\"你已经做得很好了\"的含义,B项:You already do lots of things well你已经做了很多事情了。

本段第一句中提到lots of dos and don'ts,walk away! Turn your back on too many rules背弃太多的规矩。

Your brain is so full of what you're going to be talking about,可知后一空与前一空形成因果关系,脑子里装满了条条框框只会使情况变得更糟。G项:So trying to force a whole set of rules into it will just make things worse.

You are a special person not a clone(你是一个特别的人而不是一个克隆人)以及treat you as a special one, with your own personal habits(把你当作一个特殊的人,用你自己的习惯)可以得出答案You aren't like anybody else(你是与众不同)。故选A。

18. If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different. If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses.

Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses’ meeting of a story which works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St.

Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting in a line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stomps (重踩) over to a table by himself. “Who is that?” The new arrival asked St. Peter. “Oh, that’s God,” came the reply, “but sometimes he thinks he’s a doctor.”

If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it’ll be appropriate for you to make a remark about the inedible (难吃的) canteen food or the chairman’s bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn’t attempt to cut in with humor as they will be angry at an outsider (外人) making negative remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats (替罪羊) like the Post Office or the telephone system.

If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it’s the delivery that causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.

Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected. A twist on a familiar quote “If at first you don’t succeed, give up” or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggeration and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor. 41.To make your humor work, you should . A.take advantage of different kinds of audience B.make fun of the disorganized people

C.address different problems to different people D.be helpful in solving your listeners’ problems

42.The joke about doctors implies that, in the eyes of nurses, they are . A.impolite to new arrivals B.very proud of their godlike role

C.superior to others

D.very busy even during lunch hours

43.It can be inferred from the text that public services . A.have benefited many people B.are the focus of public attention C.are an inappropriate subject for humor

D.have often been the laughing stock

44.To achieve the desired result, humorous stories should be delivered . A.in well worded language B.as awkwardly as possible C.in exaggerated statements

D.as naturally as possible

45.The best title for the text may be “ ”. A.Use Humor Effectively

B.Various Kinds of Humor

C.Add Humor to speeches D.Different Humor Strategies

CBDDA

45.A 主旨题。
